Hello CC,

When I visit college websites, the website states application submission deadlines along with application requirements. One of the requirements is the midyear report. At my school, the midyear report includes first semester examinations results. First semester (midterm) exams don't start until January 12. Furthermore, regular decisions deadlines usually fall in the December 31st/January 1st range... What am I supposed to do in this situation?

Thanks in advance. :)

It’s not unusual for the mid-year report not to be submitted until after the application deadline. Just because the application deadline is December 31/January 1, the decisions are not usually mailed until March (unless you are doing early decision). Schools which have a lot of applicants have to work all the files, which takes time. You have your midyear report sent as soon as it’s available.

It’s possible if your file is reviewed before your midyear report is received you may have already been cut from consideration if you are not a strong applicant based on your record. Your midyear report, even if it is all A’s, won’t help you at this point. However, if you are on the borderline, a strong midyear report could help to show you are still working hard. Or, a poor midyear report may tip the scales in the other direction for a borderline applicant.

Last year my S applied early decision to a school and the application was due in November. He hadn’t finished the fall semester yet, nor would he be finished when the school released its decisions in early December. The college called his guidance counselor and asked for his in-progress grades.

He was admitted. He still had his midyear report sent in after he was admitted, since schools can also rescind admission.

Thank you very much for your insight.
