"Varsity Athletics: (not required to do varsity athletics)
I am interested in participating in the following varsity sports at MIT: "

Can I list sports I'm interested in even though I haven't participated in them? i.e. sailing, fencing, etc.?

It has been many years since I was at MIT, but trying new sports was one of the greatest things about my college experience.

I had played a little ice hockey with friends on the local ponds but always wanted to do more. I got the chance at MIT to do so and was the starting varsity goalie by my junior year.

I also tried rowing crew. It was a great sport but I was not able to do it at a high enough level to make the varsity and play hockey at the same time. Did get to row with the MIT novice crew in the Head of the Charles, which is a world class event (and coming up next weekend). Hockey won out however. So, I got into single sculls. I would row at lunch during the summers when I was working at school. We would have a lot of informal races with people from all the other boat clubs along the river.

So try all the sports you want to. You’ll have lots of fun.

I also found that when I wasn’t doing sports, I would have too much pent up energy to really want to sit down and study. When I got thru with hockey practice, there was nothing more I wanted to do than sit down and not move much. My grades were always better when I was active in sports. Maybe having to organize one’s time to be able to participate in sports also had something to do about it.

Thank you very much!
