Okay, how does this work exactly? Does a grade on an AP you get in high school go towards your college GPA? like a 5 being an A, 4 a B, and so on? or does it just not show up on your college transcript or get weighted into your GPA?

To my knowledge, the AP score does not factor into your gpa in any way. The score does not get translated into any grade on your college transcript.

The AP scores you need to get college credit vary college to college as do the number of credits they give you for the same course. You get the credit and they assign a course number to it, ie Math 101 for Calc- (just made up the number). They do not give you an actual grade.

Here is an example:
Son1- 13 AP’s and 1 college course. He rec’d 45 credits at UMiami.
Son2- 7 AP’s and 1 college course. He rec’d 45 credits at SUNY Buffalo (UB not Buff State)
(UB gave 5 credits for some science courses where Miami only gave 3)

You send your AP report to the school you are attending in the summer or have it automatically sent when you take the May tests as by then you know the college you are going to in the Fall. During the summer, the college will let you know the credits they are giving you and which courses they count for.
