I want to audition for a college production in the Fall but have no idea which monologue I should use. I need to prepare a 1-2 minute monologue "of any sort, from any period". The last time I auditioned for a play was middle school so I have no idea which monologues would be suitable for this audition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Also If it helps the auditions are open to everyone who attends the university.

Also would it be okay to use a monologue from the play to audition?

I think if you can find a monologue from the play AND it’s from a particular part you are auditioning for, that’s perfectly OK. Does this college have a BA or BFA Theatre major?

Typically, you would audition with a monologue that is NOT from the play. It’s a good idea to pick a monologue that is from a similar play (or similar character as to how you’d like to be cast) or a monologue from a play by the same playwright.

The college only has a BA Theatre major.

OK, I revise what I said previously. Better not to “shoot from the hip.” Instead, I just asked my S who just graduated as a theatre major from a very well known program. He said that you should NOT use a monologue from the play you are auditioning for, but rather pick something in the same style, something in the same time period as the play is set, etc. Great that they let everyone from your college audition and good luck to you, but if there is a strong BA theatre program at your school, you’ll have a big hill to climb. There are books with monologues you can peruse.

Thank you so much for the advice 2019theatre mom and momof3sons!
