Hello all ,
I have a question?
I am a computer science major , transferring from CCC. I might get accepted for B.A program.
Can I after I transfer change from B.A to B.S ?
Thank you al
I’m sure you can.
Thank you so much @lindyk8
You need to find out what the degree is called at the college/university you are applying to. Some will call it a BA, some will call it a BS. Some might have both a BA and a BS for a specific major with slightly different graduation requirements.
Why would it matter?
As ucbalumnus asked, why does it matter if it’s BA or BA?
@ucbalumnus @fallenwinter
B.S courses focuses more in the technical side.
B.A courses focuses more in art and humanities side
That’s what most schools said.
To say that one focuses more on technical or humanities is an over generalization. Many places only offer one or the other. The difference between a BA and a BS at Happykid’s university, is whether or not the student took one year of a foreign language instead of some other random elective. That’s it. If a major doesn’t require a foreign language, even though it is what might be considered to be a traditionally artsy field, the student graduates with a BS. Yup, all those acting majors and music majors graduate with BS degrees, and a math or physics major who takes a foreign language will walk out the door with a BA instead of a BS.
What will matter for you when you go to apply for a job, or for grad school, is the specific courses that you took, not whether the degree is named BA or BS or something else entirely. If you are wondering about differences between programs at more than one college and university, print out the graduation requirements for the programs, and check them course by course to see whether they are or aren’t different.
^ what she said. I chose BA because I actually WANTED to take a foreign language
@fallenwinter @happymomof1
I might be mistaken, but I don’t think the foreign language requirement makes the B.A. vs. B.S.
At my school, all degree types have to take a foreign language class- including B.S. majors.
The way I’ve been told and gathered is that B.A. degrees are more flexible in that more electives and exploration of similar fields are allowed, while B.S. degrees follow a stricter curriculum more in line with those who want to focus purely on their major. Looking at the different in B.A. and B.S. degrees for my major, it seems this is the case. At least, it IS in my school.
This can, of course, differ. I may also be wrong.
@NotYetEngineer You aren’t mistaken. It all depends on the school really. For the school I applied to, the BA and BS are pretty much the same but the BA does have a bit more room for exploration, which I prefer. And to answer your question OP, changing from BA to BS should not be a problem.
@NotYetEngineer - Yes, at Happykid’s university that IS the one thing that distinguishes a BA from a BS. The point I am trying to make here, is that each college and university sets its own policy about BA vs. BS. There is no way to predict, and it is not appropriate to assume that one or the other is a “better” degree to get. You really do have to look at the graduation requirements.
