Question about being... Deferred !?!??!

Hey, I applied for the Fall 2010 term, and I got Deferred till I retake the ACT/SAT. I really thought I wasn't going to have a problem getting in, check my stats:

GPA: 4.3 which should jump to a 4.5 or 4.6 with the amount of aps that I'm taking this year.
Top 10% of my class.

AP Classes 9 (Taking 6 this year)
I've taken Honors everything else with the exception of PE, and Spanish because they don't offer that in Honors.

ACT: Highest Score 23( Actually scored the same thing twice) I'm not the greatest standardize test taker in the world.
SAT: 1150 Just Reading and Math scores(Score the Same exact score twice weird I know)

EC's: TSA for a Year 2006-07
Leader of the Computer Animation Team for a Year 07-08
My Junior year because of difficulties financially I was not able to attend after school programs.
Mu Alpha Theata 2009-2010
Tutoring kids in Math and Science.

My Essay: I wrote about my struggles with my abusive father, and how even with the abuse I maintained my grades, and took the rigorous courses my school had to offer to my attempts to overcome my past.

Do you think they possibly made a mistake? I'm getting my guidance consoler to send in a recommendation, and I'm meeting with my BRACE advisor tomorrow to see if I can clear this up. What do you guys think? I applied in October, do you think I'll still have a chance even if I have to retake the test? I'm kinda spazing out right now, that was suppose to be my safety school.

You’re the second one on CC with an insane GPA deferred from UCF; looks like ACT/SAT trumps GPA…good to know…

obviously retake the test and see what happens…

fwiw, UCF is ridiculous with this policy…your GPA is amazing…

edit: on another thread, SSobick remarked how UF was increasing OOS admits; keep an eye on the OOS admits to UCF…may influence decisions instate…

Ugg, I guess I’ll just try to get a high score, there’s nothing else I can do, other then send in letters of recommendation.

keep taking the sat, they superscore the sat but not the act…call them after the scores are received at the school, speak to an admissions rep and have them re-evaluate your decision…you should eventually get in…you just need to be persistent.

My daughter was deferred by UCF for Fall semester three years ago for her test scores (23 ACT, 1050 SAT). She had a 4.0 gpa/4.9 hpa…top 20 in a class of 600…tons of e/c, 4 APs, leadership, volunteering, unbelievable stats. She got into UF for summer and finally UCF tossed her a bone for summer. She refused to take the ACT/SAT again…Now, she is a senior at UF with a 3.8 gpa, graduating with high honors. We still cannot believe UCF deferred her with a perfect 4.0 gpa and top 20 in her class…standardized tests are so important to ucf admissions…my son was admitted to Fall 2010 with just his test scores (30 ACT/1290 SAT)…in 6 days, without even his high school transcripts.
Make sure you apply to UF for summer if you like that school …ACT/SAT scores are only 10% of their consideration. Also,if you don’t want to take the tests again, maybe reapply for summer at UCF…we know lots of kids who got in with stats much lower than yours. You are a wonderful candidate…

If you think UCF is getting harder to get into then you should see the stats of students who were denied last year for both summer and fall at UF…it has gotten a bit crazy. I know students who were accepted to ivys and didn’t get into UF! Crazy!

This is really odd o.O I wouldnt say your GPA is insane, but its good. Its probably lower than what you think it is because UCF weighs it differently, but not by much. Your SAT score isnt even really borderline … I think its a solid score that shouldve gotten you into UCF … but I guess every year something odd like this happens. Don’t give up though, and dont second guess yourself, you clearly are a great student. Try taking the SAT one more time, if not, try reapplying for summer because there is no way they can turn you down for summer with those stats.

For what it’s worth, UF, Miami, FSU, and UCF all have average SATs of 1225 or above (out of 1600). Every other school in Florida averages less than 1200. The University of South Florida, however, isn’t too far off. They topped 1185 this Fall, their highest ever.

What state are you from?

The reason why UF denies those brilliant students is because they apply to UF as a safety school. Once they get into their desired ivy league school, they kiss UF goodbye. UF could have admitted one more student into their incoming freshmen class if this didn’t happen.
