question about being deffered and tryin to get it reversed

actually 2 questions....

1 Should I try and have my guidance councelor find out why I was deferred?

or Should I just try to contact my admissions rep and see if I had any weaknesses?

2 If any of you did the second option, how did you initiate the conversation with the rep? In the e-mail/phone call what did you first talk about? Did you just dive right in and start asking about anything you could improve on? or did you talk about something else

Any help would be appreciated....... Thank you

One reason for being deferred is that they want to see more information such as your mid-year senior report before they make a decision. There are two ways of thinking about deferals and which one you take probably depends on the particular college. 1) Applying ED and being deferred helps you in RD because you have shown interest. 2) If they didn't like you the first time, it doesn't bode well for RD. Which is true would depend on how the college views ED. They may think of it as a process where they only take the auto-admits or they may think of it as just an earlier version of RD.

It would be better to have you GC call if they will do it because the adcoms will be more candid with the GC than you. If you ask, they are just going to say "well, the candidate pool was especially strong this year and ....". If you do call/email, start with a comment about how much you love the college and want to attend, and then ask what you can do to improve your chances. It is a subtle point, but if you ask why you didn't get in, then it puts a different tone on the conversation. Ask what you can do in order to get in.

Our experience last year with two deferrals is that the adcoms didn't want to talk to anybody other than my daughter. (We homeschooled but utilized an umbrella -- the executive director called both schools and was told that they wanted to talk to my daughter.)

She asked if there was anything she could provide that would be a useful supplement to her application (she had a few suggestions to offer). One school said there was nothing; the other suggested something, which she did and she was admitted. But then she chose a different school after all ...

thanx for all your help dufus and Diane..... i will go to my GC and first ask if she would be willing to call and then I will email the rep myself.
