Question about Bike Theft at Cal Poly

I was thinking of getting the Specialized Sirrus Comp bicycle, which costs about $900 at LBS and is more expensive than most bikes at college campuses. If it is locked, how persistent will criminals be in trying to steal this bike? It comes with a carbon fiber fork. Would they try to disassemble parts of the bike to steal components?

Could someone give me a general idea of how a bike like this would fare? Here is a link to the Specialized website so you can get an idea of how attractive the bike looks.

Are you an incoming freshman planning to lock it outside the dorms? Bikes do get stolen from time to time, but I haven’t heard that it’s a huge problem. Not much room in the dorm rooms to stash it. Might be best to get something less valuable to cruise around on freshman year and buy the nice bike when you’re a soph and can fit it in your bigger apartment/house.

Nice bike. I think you’ll be fine as long as you use two U-locks or a U-lock combined with something else. I have a pretty expensive bike too and was paranoid about it getting stolen when i got here, but after locking it up a few times I have no problem locking it up and leaving it there pretty much the whole day while I’m at class. As long as you lock your bike up correctly, you shouldn’t get it stolen. Register it with the police too/take a picture of you with it for more protection.

I don’t recommend leaving it outside overnight however due to a higher change of theft and rust of course. You should always leave it in your dorm room when you are there.
