I'm a rising senior interested in BME, and from what I've seen, biomed engineering at Duke is always ranked as one of the top programs in the country. But I was wondering what makes BME at Duke so much better than at other schools. Is it the faculty, curriculum, facilities?

It's Dr. G.

LOL - blush
To actually answer the question though - it is a combination of things.

First - the facilities are nice - we don't have the kind of lab space we'd like, but we're >300,000 square ft. closer now that Fitzpatrick is up and running. However, the BME program lives right across the street from the hospital and in fact there are some medical center programs in the engineering complex and some engineers working at the medical center. When BME came online, having a top-notch medical center a stone's throw away provided a huge advantage.

Second, they have awesome faculty (BME is actually the only department I haven't been a member...hopefully those two things aren't related). There are people who are pioneers in their field and people who are pioneering new fields now. And you can actually do research with them if you want, which I think is a big draw. If you look at programs like the "Devices for People with Disabilities" class of the "Engineering World Health" center - folks like that.

Finally - it's the Prattitude. The idea that you are here to learn, and create, and enjoy, all at the same time.
