Question about boxes?

I know we're allowed to ship two boxes to Cornell that they hold for us until move-in day.

Now, how big can these boxes be? And also, what is the mailing address that we send them to? I'll be living in Risley (which is on North Campus) if this makes any difference.

Thanks!

If you are going to use Big Red Shipping, check this: [Big Red Shipping & Storage](Login | BRSS)

If you are not going to use it, I don’t know how big it could be, but the mailing address should be your own address:
(your name)
(room number) (dorm)
Cornell University
Ithaca, NY 14853

Some people say it’s better to put Cornell University on line 1 of the address, but I don’t think it makes more sense to put it on line 2.

living in risley i would not ship myself large boxes because you have to carry them all the way from APPEL back to your dorm…

i dont think you can use brss after the 10th. i mean, you can still ship stuff to cornell but brss won’t put the boxes in your dorm for you.

i have a ton of boxes (7). does becker have an elevator? also, where do park to unload your stuff. is there parking right in front of becker?

i’m not sure how they arrange parking for becker…but 7 boxes is a lot…

you might have to walk a lot (steps and hills)

The website says that they would accept the package until 17th. So, as long as it arrives before 18th, it should be fine. (esp if people are crazy enough to ship their stuff overnight :p)

7 boxes are indeed a lot, and I believe Becker does have an elevator (feel I pass by it when I go to Becker’s dining hall)

fri3nds04: thanks! do u know what the parking is like at becker for move-in day?

so no one has any idea how big the boxes can be?

check the brss guide? there is a chart on there with box sizing and pricing…i think like 22x22x22 is the largest you can get away with for the cheapest price (40/box)

if you’re shipping on your own (and not with Big Red Shipping) then i don’t think there is necessarily a limit as to the size of boxes…

although like i said…you will be carrying these boxes to risley on your own…

you can borrow a cart i think but you’ll have to return it back!

As far as I know and remember people who moved in usually drive in from the Noyes side to the space between Bethe and House 5/Flora Rose. The space nearby Keeton is usually reserved for frat or staff (?). I think when I went to the the area last year, it wasn’t as crowded around 5 or 6 PM.
I could be wrong though… never lived in West… :)

to the OP … instead of relying on second hand info I’d suggest calling Cornell and finding out directly

i would recommend you have at least 3 people (4 would be better) to help you move in…

that way you can unload boxes…while 1 person stands there securing them and while 1 or 2 of you can go up to your room and have the 1 person secure them downstairs

No, people living in Becker do not park between Rose and Bethe. You’ll park between Rose and Becker, and you’ll drive up from the loading dock driveway on Stewart Avenue. Your car will be on the lawn, you’ll get one of those rolling cart things, load your stuff on (I had to make two trips, oops), one person has to stay with car (but you’ll break this rule when parents want to say goodbye in your room, etc.), the other one or two bring stuff upstairs. Yes, there’s an elevator. The only carrying you’ll do is from trunk of car to cart and from cart to floor of your room.

Edit: They might make you go through the loading dock, instead? If so, same process, but you’ll be going from basement –> your floor instead of lobby –> your floor. I believe that for new transfer students who move in on the 20th, it’ll be through loading dock, but if you’re a returning student, it’ll be through lobby/you’ll park on the lawn.

thanks indigo451!!

Things have changed a lot since I transferred and moved in to my room…but my move-in experience was like this: the cars where lined up and when it was my turn, two student helpers came over and helped my mother and I unload the car while my dad stayed with the car. When the car was unloaded, my dad was directed to park on the slope. The students also helped bring my belongings to my room.

Compared to the move-in experience at my first college…the process at Cornell was very smooth and enjoyable.
