I am going to be a freshmen at Cal this Fall. I am hoping to double in Business/Econ. I know that business classes can't be used to fulfill breadth requirements, but can econ classes be used by an intended econ major? I still need to complete the R&C requirement.

I saw someone else suggest on here that Econ 1 and UGBA 10 be taken first semester to be sure that pre-business students really do want to major in business. I am assuming this would be especially beneficial if I were to double major in both econ and business.

If anyone has actually done this double major or knows someone who has, all and any insight is greatly appreciated.

I have been doing a lot of research on this the past few days, but haven't found a very concrete answer.

Haas recommends taking one prereq each semester, but I took Econ 1 and UGBA 10 last spring and it was completely doable. Just make sure to lighten up on your other classes so you can dedicate time to those two classes.

You should plan out your next two years so that you stay on track for a possible double major. Depending on what requirements you’ve already fulfilled, you might need to take summer sessions after freshman year.

The material in UGBA10 is easy. All tests are multiple choice; essays are all 2 pages and not hard. HOWEVER, the hard part about this class is that there is a curve. Since the class is a weeder for all Haas intended majors, you are competing against a hard crowd. For tests, missing 4 questions isn’t that bad for a 30 question test. However, when you’re on a curve, that might as well be a C. The class isn’t hard; the curve is.

sparetire is right. and really, it depends on you. if you’re not so confident, I would suggest taking either econ 1 or ugba 10 first semester…college life is different, but for some people that’s not a problem.
