Question about breadth

Can one class be used to satisfy more than one breadth requirement? For example, ESPM 50AC satisfies the AC requirement, historical studies, philosophy and values, and social and behavioral science requirement. Can it be used for all of those? Also, can major requirements be used to satisfy breadth?

A given class can only be counted for one of the seven breadth categories, even if it is qualifed, like ESPM 50AC, for three of them. However, the AC requirement is separate and the good news is that this class can satisfy BOTH the AC and one of the seven breadth categories simultaneously.

Yes, a class in a major can also satisfy a breadth category, as can the classes in the pre-med sequence. Physical and biological sciences are covered by the CHEM and PHYS courses, needing no incremental classes to check off those two breadth requirements.

Thanks! So I can pick which of the breadth requirements it satisfies? And do you know if these rules also apply to CED or is this just for L&S?

The seven breadth requirements exist for CED as well. Here is the page describing the degree requirements for CED. Note that you cannot use courses in your major to also satisfy breadth requirements. I was in error above (post 2) saying that you could, if you were referring to CED and not L&S where this is permissible. There are other minor restrictions.

CED - College of Environmental Design - Degree Requirements

I know of no place where you explicitly declare which of the breadths you will satisfy with a course like ESPM 50AC that could be used for several.

Instead, the way it must work (warning, assumptions made here) is that when you are doing a degree audit to validate that you have met your requirements, the classes you have passed are examined to find a way that maximally satisfies the various requirements such as the breadths. You may think that you are going to use the example class for historical studies breadth requirement, but later you end up taking a different qualifying class that satisfies historical studies and now you need to instead use that ESPM 50AC as your philosophy and values requirement. As long as the degree audit can find a separate class to satisfy each of the seven breadths, you are golden.

Thanks a lot rider. Is it extremely difficult to switch into CED? It says an essay is required on the petition to change college.
