I am a junior and currently taking an intro to finance course. I find it very interesting. That's why I decide go to a career in finance area in the future. However as one of the counselors at the career center criticized my resume and said the all my activities, volunteer works or job experience on my resume are unrelated to the finance or what those firms are looking for. So does anyone has any recommendation what I can do in my last year at cal to get more experience, activities, or skills related to the finance in order to build my resume and hopefully land interviews next year?

I know some work-study jobs are clerical (“administrative”) with quantitiative Excel work. If you have work-study you should search the postings. Also, I think part-time retail cashier is finance-related since there’s a cash handling and service experience there.

I don’t know if one year is gonna cut it honestly, but like weebly said, finding a related job (work-study wise) would be beneficial.

“Finance” is a broad field. Do you know what you specifically want to do?

Also, you should know that finance pays very well right out of college so you will be competing against people who have been grooming their resume and “networking” (i.e. “please cum on my face, mr. recruiter!”) since their freshmen year.

I am interested in ibanking and risk management

I know it is kind too late for me to compete with those kids who have started building connection since their freshman year. And I know many of my friends go to accounting jobs which have more spots available than finance, but I really don’t enjoy accounting. That’s why I pick finance which I have some interest at it but less experience or qualification. But I still want to do my best and try to build those things up in my senior year because this is better than not doing it. And thanks for all you guys’ replies: )

You can intern over the summer? Google summer sessions special program for Berkeley.

I suggest you spend your remaining year networking really hard. Go to all the events that have ibanking guys there and get your name out there. Make a good impression and make sure they all remember you, so when recruiting season comes they will be more inclined to give you an interview. And be ready to answer the question of “why ibank?” Since you don’t seem to have an extensive background showing your interest, this question is really important.

Your best bet is to get a finance-related internship during the summer or next year. Check Callisto.

I just found out that the full-time recruitment will start from Aug to Sep for the next year offer? So will then be too late for me start to build the networking after this September?

Check the last post in this thread out please! doing my friend a favor to spread the word : ]
