Question about Cal Day and the Overnight Stay Program

Hey guys, just wanted to hear from people who have experienced both events at Berkeley. I plan on going to Cal Day on the 16 and they have an OSP session on the 17-18 which I thought would be perfect as I only have to make one trip.

My question is: is doing both events consecutively a good idea, or will I get a tour on Cal Day and then the exact same tour the next day? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

very different, even though there is obviously some overlap.

Cal Day is aimed at the general visitor, which means alumni, incoming students, parents, community members, and anyone else interested. It has a few sample lectures, it has conducted tours of museums and facilities that are not normally open, it has booths hosted by most campus activities, clubs and organizations, it has alum get-togethers, there are tours of the various dorm facilities (in fact more than you would see during OSP), and many information lectures about topics such as study abroad. You could duplicate the information, but perhaps not the experience you will have at OSP or CalSO because Cal Day is so comprehensive. Look through what is available - you can only get to a fraction of everything because so much is happening [Cal Day 2011 - General Program](http://caldayur-prod.berkeley.edu/)

OSP is aimed at incoming students and with that program you are able to meet with and talk to students, sit in sessions answering questions about Cal and helping someone make a decision. You stay in a dorm room which gives you much more depth about that particular building, room type and the experience of living in a dorm, but doesn’t really let you see all the variety of dorm types from Foothill to Clark Kerr to the units nor explore different room types such as suites. OSP gives you much of what you will need to make your final decision whether Cal is right for you. You will learn about traditions and some history of the school, also gives you a chance to seek more specific answers to questions that are not anticipated in the standard presentations and on the web sites you can explore throughout the year. There are actually multiple types of overnight visits, hosted by different organizations. Alumni Assoc sponsored, Cal new student services sponsored, regents scholar oriented . . . some called OHP, some called ROHP and the more comprehensive OSP. Here is a typical schedule:
Day 1
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Student Check-in @ MLK Student Union (Session 1) or Alumni
House (Session 2 and 3)
Campus Tours
4:00 pm - 11:30 pm
Welcome Session & Icebreakers
Dinner – Crossroads Dining Commons
Alumni and Student Panels
Night Activities (Hike to the “Big C” and Southside Caf

Thank you for the in-depth answer! I’m very excited about attending both Cal Day and OSP!

Dang OSP sounds awesome now. Sadly wasn’t offered a spot ):

Anyone know how different the SoCal CalSO is to the one on campus? I doubt I’ll be able to trek up that far over the summer but I also hope I won’t be missing out on an important event.

^ @Pop, if you don’t care about visiting the campus, I’d suggest the SoCal CalSO. It took ~6 hours instead of the two days the regular CalSO took and you don’t have to spend money on airfare. :)

The only things you’ll miss are (probably) a more close-knit CalSO group/guide, sleeping in the dorms for the first time, CalSO bonding, and a tour of the campus.

do you have to be invited to attend OSP? because i dont see it on my “my events” or “my message” list… is it inivites only?

because i live in socal and im planning on going up there on the 14th of april

I got invited to the OSP as an applicant to the Alumni Leadership award. However, I’m pretty sure it’s open to all admits.

There are three sessions, but it states that spots fill up fast so don’t delay! I feel like I’m making a pitch here…
