So, I'm an incoming freshman into Michigan and I recently just received my AP scores and got a 4 on the Calculus BC AP exam. So this means I have received 2 credits for both Calc 1 and Calc 2 at Michigan. So i guess my question is should I sign up for calculus 3? How hard is Calc 3 at Michigan? Is it so hard that I may not pass even if I work hard? I mean, I'm a hard worker and all but I don't know if I want to take a class which is so difficult that I may not pass. So is Calc 3 really hard or is it doable?
Thanks :D

Like most math/sciences, it’s challenging, but doable.

I agree it is doable, but I really had to put effort in. A lot of conceptualization and concepts that I wasn’t sure about. Oh yeah, and not to mention some of the HWs are absurd. Toward the end of the year I was actually doing them (instead of copying like a lot of people do) and it probably took around 10-12 hours per assignment.

I wanna ask a similar question about Calc II. I got a 4 on the Calc AB exam…should I trust in my ability and go ahead and take Calc II?

So, a 4 is like only a 4. So, I say use the extra time for a writing class.

If you’re aiming for a passing grade, i.e. B- or C’s, you can get by as long as you try pretty hard. My roommate has a 5 on the BC, but got a C in the class. Two really smart friends(3.9+ and 3.7+ 1st yr GPA) got A- and B+ in calc 3 respectively,
your odds aren’t looking too great. people say calc 2 hard, but calc 3 is no joke either.

If you’re a hardworker, you should be fine.

What’s the general consensus on Honors Calc III (MATH 285). This was the one recommended to me.

@invamma

From the few friends I knew who took 285 this was what my impression was: the classes are taught significantly better than 215, but the tests seem to go more in depth than 215. HOWEVER, there’s huge grade inflation in the honors math. I remember one friend who got a 30 something on a test, but still wound up with a B. I don’t think you can go below a B.

On the otherhand, I honestly think Calc 3 has been the worst taught class I’ve taken so far. My teacher just took examples straight from the book and was really slow (nice guy though). And also the lectures just don’t prepare you for the HW at all. If you wanna do the HW right go to the mathlab.

Man, frosh year memories. Enjoy it while you can guys

Thanks for the responses guys! I think I may try to start in calc 2 just so I can get a handle on college classes then move to calc 3
thanks again :D

^ Really? it seems like a waste of time to me, I’d go to calc 3…

“Thanks for the responses guys! I think I may try to start in calc 2 just so I can get a handle on college classes then move to calc 3”

Actually, I hear calc2 is harder than 3.

both are difficult for an average student.

Take them at the community college if you worried about it. Usually much easier and if you do poorly that grade doesn’t average in at u of m but you still get credit. Just make sure you ACTUALLY learn the material… because you will pay for it later if you don’t.
