Hi there:

I already applied UCSD and signed tag by applied math major with GPA 3.6. If I cannot finish my tag requirement (I already finish assist.org requirement), may I still have as same opportunity as other students who did not sign the tag. If yes, how this program works out? I mean: Transfer students may know the result before the last semester in community college. UCSD assumes I will finish the tag requirement. If I am not, they will reject my tag. And how UCSD figures out if I am still qualify to get in? Thank you.

If you have submitted a TAG application and were provisionally approved, then you have to meet those conditions one of which is completion of IGETC by spring. If you have not already completed IGETC, and then do not meet this requirement by the spring semester b**, then you will not qualify for the TAG, but will be AUTOMATICALLY considered for the regular admissions process (at least that is what they are SUPPOSED to do, according to their information)

With your gpa of 3.6, you should be just fine for admissions since math is not a competitive (impacted) major at UCSD, and UCSD DOES NOT do a comprehensive or “holistic” review. They only go by your UC TRANSFERABLE GPA and set a hard cutoff point (in other words their admissions are done purely by “numbers”). I’m not even sure how much importance is given to pre-req completion at UCSD, unlike UCLA and Berkeley, where it is the holy grail of the admission criteria!

Personally, I think this TAG requirement to complete IGETC (in particular for engineering and ‘hard science’ majors) is a very stupid one, especially since we have a quadrillion pre-reqs to complete!! I am in the exact same situation as you, and was hoping to complete IGETC by this spring, but will not be able to do so due to some extra pre-reqs I have to complete for Berkeley as well. Although I’m confident that I can get into UCSD pretty easily even without TAG (I have a 3.81 gpa and my major, Electrical Engineering, is not impacted either), I am concerned that these guys could screw things up. Even though they are SUPPOSED TO automatically qualify you for regular admissions, some admissions reader who could care less, might not take the time to carefully look, and make a knee-jerk decision and throw the file into the “ineligible” pile for denials!

That is exactly why I was trying to find a way to see if we can withdraw the TAG application and present them with a “clean from scratch” file, since with our gpas the TAG was an overkill anyways. But, unfortunately, there does not appear to be a way to do this. So we’re stuck. All that said, I still do think the chances of something going seriously wrong are fairly low since I’ve seen it now in several places where they say they will automatically consider the file to be a “regular admissions” file if TAG requirements are not fullfilled!

Thank you for answer my question. As you said, I already updated my application in Jan, but I chose the course what I planed to finish my tag requirement. I think I cannot finish it, how can I let UCSD to notice that?

since the Jan 31st deadline has passed, you will need to call the admissions office and let them know. They will tell you exactly what to do (possibly to email them the details of the course you have dropped). See link below
