Question about chances to HYP

Hi, I was wondering of the two examples below, which one has the better chance in getting to HYP.

1.) 3.5gpa + 2300 + Good EC (national awards, leadership etc..)

2.) 4.0gpa + 2300 + Weak EC (minimal EC, no national awards etc....)

1, but the EC would have to consist of more than just awards and leaderships...has to include stuff that's different and not the average (which would be the leadership and national awards for HYP).

the fist one undoubtedly... GPA matters, but with weak ECs HYP are out of the question

neither...

Meh, second would probably be better chance if the school is normal just because a 3.5 is not HYP material at most schools.

3.5 is absurdly low for HYPS. The chance of someone with a 3.5 getting into HYPS is so low, in fact, that "good ECs" wouldn't be nearly enough to make up for it.

2 have extremely low chances also, but at least that person has a chance with essays/recs.

for top ivies, i would say strong ec's are probably more important given same std. test scores, but for lower ivies and other top schools, i would say academics are more important

i agree with emily, neither person a or b is getting into hyp unless you are urm. there's a book out there that discusses in depth about 50 accepted harvard students and what their body of work encompassed leading into their harvard apps. a and b would be caddies for those accepted and profiled in the book

Neither. No better than 1 in 12 in either case, and likely worse.

Neither would have much of a shot.
