Question about changing majors at UCLA

hello! i'm sorry if this question has been asked (i searched "changing majors" in the search and came up with nothing), and i'm spending the summer in china and the internet has decided to not load the ucla page for like, the past week (ugh the internet here is so unreliable. or maybe it's just my apartment's.. idk.) .. so i'm asking here. haha.

so basically my question is .. how easy is it to change your major at ucla? i visited berkeley and the lady who spoke to us there basically told us that whatever you choose as your major is what you're stuck with ..
and yeahh, i'm considering majoring in bio (maybe premed) but that may change .. so i was just wondering if it was worth it to apply to ucla? because i don't want to get stuck majoring in a subject i end up hating. ;/
and on that thread- is it easy to take classes in other colleges within the university? i can't remember what the lady at berkeley said 'cause after she said that it's impossible to change majors i kinda tuned out.

thanks so muchh :D
sorry again for this question if it's somewhere else- i'd be thankful if you'd redirect me. and if it's on the website i'm sorry again, lol. i was just getting impatient and frustrated with my internet/china ..

That’s weird. When I visited Berkeley they made it clear that WE DO NO LET YOU PICK MAJORS AS FRESHMAN. They where keen to emphasize the liberal arts in their education.

Anyways, as long as you don’t switch to an impacted major such as political science, you should be fine. The counselors at college day repeatedly told us that UCLA students switch their major on average twice.

Sorry for stealing your thread, bubbles, but does anyone know how difficult it is to switch from engineering to physical science or life science?

easy. i was comp sci, switched to psychobio. just start taking your general lower div life science requirements (one math, one GE, one LS/GE.)

drbash,

What’s an “impacted major”?

This article explains them pretty well:

[The Daily Bruin - Students shouldn?t have to compete for major](http://dailybruin.ucla.edu/stories/2002/apr/1/students-shouldnt-have-to-comp/)

In essence, impacted majors are very popular majors with more students interested than spots in the program. Because of this you must be accepted to UCLA as “Pre-Political Science”, “Pre-Communications”, “Pre-Psychology” in order to join the major after finishing class requirements. You CAN change to these majors, but you FIRST need to finish all prerequisites with a 2.0 GPA and get approval from the department. From what I have heard, this is not too hard of a process. The obstacles in place are just in order to decrease demand from students not passionate about his or her subject.

You can switch major at both Berkeley and UCLA. But the process is much much MUCH harder at Berkeley, therefore most (if not all) students rarely change majors. So in essence … yes you’re stuck with it unless you can really convince your professors or counselors otherwise.
At UCLA, the process is a lot simpler, even for some impacted majors. There are certain requirements you have to meet, but it’s much easier to switch majors.
Here’s the link for switching majors from or to School of Engineering: [HSSEAS OASA | Change of Major](http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/current/change.html)
For College of Letters and Science, you go in undeclared, so it’s very easy to switch your major.
For other colleges, I think it is as simple as filling out a form and getting it signed by an adviser or counselor. Talk to your counselor or someone in the office of your department to find out what paperwork you need. Your major may require you to stay for a quarter before switching, so find out by talking to your department.

thank you for this (:

Very helpful!
