I was recently accepted to UC Berkeley's College of Engineering in the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Major. While I'm pretty much decided on Berkeley for college, I'm not sure that I would like to graduate in this major.

My question is whether this Major is binding or whether it is possible to change to another one - likely Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. I actually can't recall if I selected this major, as I've done quite a few apps over the past 6 months, but if there was an option to not choose a major I may have selected that.

Obviously I don't want to be bound to a major that I'm not interested in. I'm sure there is some flexibility regarding this and I can't believe that Berkeley would expect you to make such a major decision before even being accepted to the school but I wanted to confirm if it is possible to change to the Computer Science major if I do end up attending UC Berkeley.

I think switching majors within the same college is fine; switching majors from one college to another not so much. I’m sure switching from the School of Engineering (what you’re in) to College of Letters and Sciences (just an example) will be pretty easy - at least, easier than the other way around (which from my phone call earlier today I assume to be impossible). Your major change will stay within the Engineering School though, right?

Yes it would be within the same college. I guess I’m just trying to figure out how hard it is to change majors within the same college. I’ll probably go to UC Berkeley either way but the computer science and electrical engineering major would be my top choice.

If I wasn’t able to switch I would try and follow a curriculum that would allow me to go on the same career path I’m interested in; but if it’s possible to switch that would definitely be the way I’d want to go.

yeah I’ve heard mixed responses when I asked this question (I want to change from bioengineering to EECS, also within the same college). Some have said what can’tsaywho said while others say switching into EECS is difficult period. Some have said you might be able to switch your declared major at CalSO while others say your need good first semester grades and then fill out a change of major form and hope they accept it.

What if you were accepted to L&S but decide later that you want to double major between the EECS and L&S? Would that hypothetically be possible?
