I currently have a 3.9 gpa unweighted and a 4.6 gpa weighted, but I am only ranked 46 out of 324 students. I am not even in the top 10% yet and I am wondering will this end up negatively affecting my chances at admission for a university? It appears class rank is becoming more and more important and I am quite concerned. I am taking the most rigorous course work available at my school.

Wow, what kind of HS do you go to? With a GPA like that at my school you’re in the top 10.

I’m only top 14% right now, and its rather annoying.

I’m in the same boat! I’m 18/166 which is top 11 or 12% ish. VERY annoying because someone taking French III, AP Art, and College Algebra (only 3 weighted courses) is ahead of me - even though I took AP Calculus, AP Psychology & AP Language (as well as Spanish III, but it’s not weighted like French III). My 3 weighted classes were clearly more difficult and my third-level language class is not weighted, but hers is. UGGGGGH. I have one semester to pass 2 people to get into the top 10%.

Anyways. As frustrating as it is, I don’t think it’ll effect you much unless you are in a state that automatically admits students based on class rank (such as Texas). Only half of high schools rank, and more are stopping every year. Class rank seems to be something diminishing in value. So as long as you have a strong transcript I wouldn’t worry too much. If you are only a rising junior (or younger) you have plenty of time to get it up anyways!

Colleges will evaluate based on your high school.

The annoying aspect is I am applying to UT Austin and all they care about is the damn class rank and not my GPA.

UT is something of an outlier in their emphasis on class rank. Your rank will definitely affect your application there. (From outward appearances it seems your school has quite a bit of grade inflation)
