question about class rank

So, I got my class rank today....and its 34/337 which is the 10.2% at a highly competitive school in the south. I've taken about 9 AP classes, 6 honors classes, and my rank is a tad lower than others is because I've taken 4 years of foreign language which is only honors not AP (which isn't offered at my school). Will colleges consider me top 10%?

You sound like you'll be fine. Relax. 10.2% is pretty much the same as 10% anyway...

I don't know if this is very comforting to you, but usually a university will recalculate your gpa with their own weights for AP and honors courses. Which means that 10.2 isn't a particularly significant number. In either case, it ain't a bad rank you got there.

Are you a senior? DId your transcripts already go out with this rank? Personally, I would try to find out if you can opt out of having your rank listed on your transcript....Unfortunately, if you are applying to very selective schools who have to report class rank to US News, they tend to really stick to the top 10% issue....If you have the option not to report, those schools can basically ignore it if they choose to (and use your school profile to calculate an approximate rank if they need to for their own purposes)....You are the exact profile of a student where class rank really sucks and should be eliminated.....Let us know what happens.....

Well there go my spirits....

I was admitted to William and Mary early decision OOS
University of Michigan OOS plus 10,000 (40,000 for 4 years) in scholarship money (not that i'm taking it)
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign OOS
Xavier University w/ half ride
University of Tennessee w/ full ride
deferred from University of Chicago

i guess my rank doesn't suck THAT much

William and Mary and UIUC OSS? HOLY **** and UMIch w/ scholarship for a OSS???

I know that OOS valedictorians w/ 2400s and 5.0 GPAs are rejected all the time at those competitive-to-the-death state schools

congratulations!!!!

I don't think they're THAT competitive........

Congrats on acceptance to W&M. Now you are one of the few and the proud.

@dvm258

They aren't 'that' competitive for in-staters, but places like UIUC that only have 8% out of staters has extremely high standards for OOS'ers

My son attends a math/science/technology magnet (school within a school) that required high stanines for admission and good grades to continue attendance. I know his class rank will not be in the top 10% of the magnet, but would be in the top 10% of the school as a whole, and would have been in almost any of our "regular" high schools. The class rank thing seems to penalize students who chose rigorous programs, if they are then ranked within that program.

Do colleges take this type of think into consideration?

Actually, their standards aren't different. UIUC just doesn't get many OOS applicants because it's a state school.
