Question about class registration (more specifically, timing)

Hi, all. So I recently returned from orientation and have already established what will be my final schedule for the fall (unless changes need to be made, that is). Basically, I made my schedule the most commuter-friendly as possible (doesn't start too early or end too late), since I'll likely commute from home. So after a lot of manipulating, I managed to get my classes to all start at 9:00 or 9:30 (2.5 hours commute via public transportation), and end at 2:50 at the latest.

The problem is, all my classes are 10 minutes apart (except on one time slot on Thursday, where I have 15 minutes to get from one class to the other). So for anyone knowledgeable, I was wondering if it's realistic to get around the following places within 10 minutes:

-H.J. Patterson to Jimenez Hall
-Jimenez Hall to Chem building
-Chem building to Tydings Hall
-H.J. Patterson to Chem building

Also, is it generally unwise to schedule classes so that I only have 10 minutes to get between classes? I have 3-4 classes each day.

Thanks in advance for any input. :)

You shouldn’t have a problem with any of those.

10 minutes is standard. If you’re a commuter you don’t really want two/three hour breaks when you could be going home earlier.

Also a 2.5 hour commute each way is a little ridiculous. You’ll be spending 25 hours a week commuting, not counting if you have to go to campus on weekends for something.
Not that there’s very much you could do for on-campus housing now anyway.

Ok, that’s good to know.

Oh actually, I’m confirmed for housing as of now. I’m just thinking about (and leaning towards) commuting. So if I choose to, I’ll just cancel my housing request and pay whatever fines I may incur. Yeah, I live about a 45 minute drive from UMD, but commute via public transportation probably isn’t actually 2.5 hours. More like, I have to get to the metro station 1.5 hours before my class starts. But taking the bus to the metro station (~20mins), accounting for possible traffic issues, accidents, etc. puts my conservative estimate at about 2.5.

Thanks for the input!

Like ginab591, you shouldn’t really have issues with this schedule, assuming you plan well.

HJ Patterson (HJP) and Jimenez (JMZ) are literally right next to each other, so that won’t be an issue.

HJP, JMZ, and Tydings are all along the mall, near the top by McKeldin Library. The Chemistry building is a bit further away… it’s on Regents Drive, near the other science buildings (Phsics, Biochem, etc). You should be able to make that in 10 minutes… just be sure to leave class on time (e.g. don’t stay after a couple minutes once the lecture ends) and walk straight over, and it should be quite alright.

Thanks, this really helps. Yeah, I think the primary issue (when I looked on the pedestrian map) is that I basically have chemistry or chem lab every single day. And so the distances between classes become rather long most of the time. =/

Until you have ten minutes to sprint from Susquehanna to the Chem building, you don’t really have a long distance between classes.

This can help give you an idea of your day.

[TerpNav Pedestrian Mapping System](TerpNav Pedestrian Map System)

All of your classes are on the mall/north campus. You’ll only have problems if you are going from one end of campus to the other.
