when i was in school we usually had classes MWF or TTH, with few variations. some classes met once a week only.

several of the classes we are looking at are MWF with an addition class time one day a week, usually in the evening. what’s up with that? what is the extra class time for?

another class she has in one day at one time and another day at a totally different time. this make it kind of hard to put a schedule together. : /

right now, my DD has a lopsided schedule with tons on T W some on M and almost nothing on TH or F. this is due to classes not being available, certainly not by choice.

we will be trying to modify the schedule over time, but making this schedule seems a LOT harder than i remember it being.

Tuesday night is usually a math lab night. Not all the professors will use that time, but if they do, they sometimes schedule an exam or additional help/instruction. It depends on the professor. For example, with my son’s honors calculus class, the professor never used the Tuesday night slot. He gave his exams in class. My son’s girlfriend is a biology major. She had enrichment slots on Wednesday, and the professor did use that time. The CBHP classes definitely use their Monday night lab time.

Mike…

What your describing is typical these days at colleges…not just at Bama.

Many classes now have a “lab time”. I know that when we went to college, it seemed like only science classes had lab times. Nowadays, many subjects have “lab times” - some math, philosophy, foreign languages, and of course science classes have lab times these days.

Some profs don’t actually use that time - except to give tests. Some use the time for extra help, TA tutoring, or other reasons. Some expect the student to be at every lab time. It just depends.

Yes, it can make creating a schedule very difficult. I remember my older son’s first semester…every class had a lab time at some odd time or night.

However, it seems as kids move into upper division classes some of these labs go away.

Hopefully, you can adjust your D’s schedule a bit. However, having no classes on Friday is usually a good thing for a pledge during football season. LOL

not complaining about no classes on friday (though that is not really the case)

but T and W are deathly!

They may not really be as deadly as you think. Many profs don’t really use that time.

What is her schedule?

ok, we made a few changes today and it is better

now we are looking for something that will fulfill the fine arts credit tht will fit into the T TH 11:00 timeslot.

that will give her a couple of classes in the morning, break for lunch or what have you, and then labs and stuff starting around 2 or 3

one class on friday at 11 i think.

^^^
Time for a mid-day nap!

yep yep …

just got a fine arts class added … mus 121

14 credits …

throwing in a pe class would be nice but not many open.

freshman seminars??

My son just said that your daughter should take a Common Book Experience class if one is still open. They are just four or five weeks. They are taught by outstanding professors who you may never have again.

will look into that. do you happen to know the course number

Common Book Experience classes are designated UH 120 and are one credit each. Note that not all UH 120 classes are Common Book Experience classes. It really is a great way to get one of the six UH credits you need to complete UHP. Some really great professors teach these courses.

I believe they said that there will be another set of Common Book Experience classes that start mid-way through the semester.
