I have a couple of "friends" (not really but they think I am so they tell me everything) who are president of maybe 5 clubs each (considering our entire school, which is really small, only has maybe 15 clubs). Those clubs almost never meet and they don't do anything except sign up all their friends b/c everywhere year you need a certain number of people. However, this definitely looks good on a college app.
And what is also really annoying is that they're not interested in these clubs. For example, my school has an Amnesty International Club, and my friend basically joined it in sophomore year and became best friends with the then president and the presidents pick the next presidents. Therefore, she got to be president this year but she has absolutely no interest in it and she told me "what the hell, I'm not gonna have any meetings or anything".
However, I join clubs that actually do things and ones that I'm interested in, i.e. math team, debate, model congress. But those are also huge clubs and I'm currently not the head of any of them, possibly math team next year. I don't wanna sound like an ass, like omg I don't want my friends to get into college, but it just sounds so unfair, that they're the heads of so many clubs that don't do anything and ones they're not interested in, while I don't have one leadership position so far just because I actually care about my interests and not just about piling up leadership positions to "pad" (in the language of my friends) my college app.

So is there a way for colleges to tell whether or not you're actually president of a club because you're actually interested in it or you just wanna build up things for your app??
