Question about Committing

Hi,

I have a quick question. I was waitlisted to my top choice, but I obvioiusly need to committ to a school before the May 1st deadline. I am pretty sure I am going to committ to Cal Poly while I wait for a response back; they have a great Computer Science program, great environment, etc. I was reading Cal Poly’s “Terms and Conditions” online, and it said once you accept their offer for admission you are “making a committment to attend Cal Poly”.

Does that mean it’s a binding acceptance? While I would have no qualms whatsoever attending Cal Poly, I would still like the opportunity to attend my top choice if a space becomes available. I know that for most other schools you are not technically a student there until you arrive on campus and begin to pay tuition, and can therefore backout of an “acceptance” (you just don’t get your deposit back). Is this the case with Cal Poly? Maybe I’m taking this too literally, but any feedback would be great. Thanks!

I don’t think you’ll get in any trouble if you back out. But, Cal Poly probably wont be too happy about it.

Is your top choice in the UC or CS system?

No, it’s actually a private school.

Then you don’t have to worry about burning bridges. Do what you have to do.

Im in the same boat Jumper, have u put ur housing deposit down, or are u gonna wait until u hear back from the school u are waitlisted at?

I dont know what to do

Schools understand the waitlist system. They know that you have to commit by May 1 without knowing whether you will be accepted off the waitlist. They expect to lose some students this way. It’s totally fine.
