question about course selection

is it generally recommended that freshman stick to 1000-2000 level classes?

there is a 3000 level art history course that seems interesting (ARTH 3740 Painting 19th Century America, to be exact), but i'm not sure whether it is unadvisable for freshmen to take that sort of class. it says that arth 2400 is recommended, but that class isn't on the course/time roster for the fall semester :/
i did take ap art history, but i had a horrible teacher/class so while i know basics i'm not sure whether or not i have enough prior knowledge for the 3000 level course to be feasible.

there's also a 3000 level history course that seems really interesting (HIST 1127 The Modern British Empire), but i'm having similar concerns over that.

so basically is there consistently a significant difference in the difficulty of a 2000 vs 3000 vs 4000 level course, or does it depend on the subject/professor? is it better to wait until later semesters to attempt a higher level course?

i don’t think its really necessary to wait until later to attempt a higher level course. i mean, if you have the prereqs if there are any, and its open to freshman, go for it.
