mine opens the 11th, and I was waitlisted

I'm the first window, that means that I'll be the third window next semester right?

mine opens the 11th, and I was waitlisted

I'm the first window, that means that I'll be the third window next semester right?

Yup.

Which window you get is based on your Student ID, which in turn I think is based on your SSN.

my SSN is pretty leet then =)

Question. As I look at the language courses it looks like Spanish I is already heavily enrolled. If I have third window will I be able to get into a section? It would seem odd that a freshman couldn't get into Spanish I.

What freshman type courses are likely to be open for third window freshmen?

Is it possible to get into a closed course? Can profs sign you in?

ok, ok ... what are the coolest classes at Duke?

ozym - not if you spell it as 'leet' :-D n00b

starbucksguy - profs can open up aditional seats for some courses, but many of the language courses are constrained by seats... Last Fall, though, there were 4 open seats in Spanish I. If you go to registrar.duke.edu and go to the schedule of classes, you can check from last Fall to see what openings there were in courses then.

JMAN - This is the coolest class. Ever.

Actually the language departments tend to be the most open to adding new seats in classes or opening up new sections. I don't know if this is the case for Spanish, but I honestly have not heard of people having trouble getting into the intro/intermediate language courses here.

The coolest classes at Duke depend upon what you're interested in.

Starbucksguy - if you're feeling daring and want to embark on a new adventure, take a look at taking Chinese 1. The instruction for Chinese is outstanding.

Arabic 1 filled up really quickly for the coming semester, but they did open a third section for the overflow (and one section is designated freshman-only).

is it allright if you take your own language at Duke?

say if you're Korean and you take Korean?

Certainly - people from around here take English all the time :) Main thing really would be to talk with the director of undergraduate studies for the department to figure out proper placement.

musings, but ur not korean tho

People do it, but it's looked down upon if you're already fluent in your own language and you decide to take a beginning class. For fluent speakers, taking advanced classes is encouraged and there's no problem whatsoever - talk to someone in the department you're interested in if you want to figure out what class is most appropriate for you.
