When for instance a college says its deadline for admission is January 1st, is only the application due by January first or is everything like recs, test scores, transcript, etc due by that date?

Also, when typically do you do your interviews, before the deadline or after?

It's obviously generally a good idea to get everything in by the listed deadline, but usually if you're missing something from your application they'll be lenient about it and inform you ASAP of what's missing from your application though it's your responsibility to get that information to them immediately or else after a certain period of time they will withdraw your application due to incompletion.

Some schools will contact you when your application is done and setup an alumni interview. Others will have a general deadline of when to sign up for the interview, and all interviews must be completed by a certain date to be considered by each college in question. Just become educated on the admissions process of each school you're applying to and you'll be fine. Good luck :D

For instance, supposing a school states that applications and any accompanying materials are due postmarked January 1, does it mean that Jan 1st is the last day for us to go to the post office and send in our package OR Jan 1st is the day when that school recieves our materials ( meaning that we have to send them weeks in advance ). Which one is correct in this case ?

I'm a little bit perplexed. Thanks in advance for your reply :)

No, the postmark date is the date you send it (and the post office "marks" it upon receipt into the postal system).

BTW with the colleges my two applied to, the deadlines required postmarks BEFORE January 1. So things had to be on their way on or before December 31st.

You should request test scores and transcripts early enough for them to be sent by the deadline and should let recommenders know when the deadline date is. But even with this, some times things get lost. Colleges will let you know; with some you can monitor your own application status online.

It is more expensive, but if you can swing it, I suggest using FedEx, DHL, etc. That way, you can track receipt and will have less of a worry about things getting lost. One of my daughter's apps was lost, but I was able to prove to the school that the package was received. (Be sure to make a copy of your applications in case you need to replace them!)
