say i get deferred when i get my letter, can i retake the ACT and send it to them for when they look at me for regular admission? i think im gonna re-take the act december 9th... at one point i was like im never takin that test again but im over that stage and if i could get my 31 to even a 32 it could make all the difference...

i think as far as i know you CAN retake the test. if anything, retaking the test and improving on it and sending them the score AFTER a deferral will show them you are really hell-bent on coming.

I would think a 31 is fine, provided your gpa is good too. Why do you need to retake it?

ok well ill throw down my stats if i must even tho im sick of it lol...

ok here goes...

unweighted gpa: 3.99/4.00 (12 out of 636)
weighted gpa: 4.7 (3 out of 636)

9 APs by graduation

ACT: 31

SAT IIs: math II: 720 physics: 700 u.s. history: 680

EC's:

Lots of volunteer work for my catholic church
varsity fball captain
all-conference football LB (deff NOT recruited mostly just b/c of my mental aspect of the game lol)
varsity basketball captain
some other bull **** that i don't feel like listing lol

my counselor told me im right on the bubble but prob more likely to not get accepted-- some people on this board have said i might be kind of a reach... average act is about 32 but legacies (somethin ridiculous like 30% of those accepted) and athletes bring down that average act down so its more up to 33/34 range for non-athletes/non-legacies... and i don't really have a "hook" i mean i got my captainships but every1 else applying to ND is an athlete so yeah... i dont think my 31 will cut it and ND is my first choice (always has been always will be) and i pretty much need to go there!

Do you think that there is anything "unusual" about you that maybe could help? What about your essay?

dang Jvon... i love that GPA

thats crazy.. specially with the athletics and rank.... it would be tough for me to reject you lol..

and the 31 is average....... just below the 32

I wo

I honestly think you have a solid chance...?

Average ACT was actually 31.???/rounded to 32

it was 31.8 but like i said there are like close to 30% legacies that have like high 20's that bring down the act average a lot... then of course all the athletes that may have mid 20's that bring down the average so for a regular kid like me the act needs to be a little higher hopefully my gpa makes up for it...

i really liked my essay... it was about how i got caught drinking soph year in high school and it was a life changing experience and i hadn't drank since and ended up being voted captain and helping my fball team stay away from drugs and alcohol... its risky but its deff different which hopefully will help me... if ne1 is interested in reading it i could post it

Wow. Good for you! I am hard-pressed to believe they wouldn't like that!

Average ACT was actually 31.???/rounded to 32

^ my rep told me it was 32...........

I've never talked to an ND regional rep, but others who have from our local hs come back with horror stories of how hard they say it's supposed to be to get in. I'm glad I haven't... I'm paranoid enough! :)

FWIW, I have heard from a very reliable source that the average SAT for non-legacy non-minority students is 1495. I don't mean to freak anyone out but it is just important to know because there are factors which bring down the overall average.

Source available via PM if you need to know.

Keep in mind that there are many factors involved in admissions, it is much more than just test scores.

SAT for non-legacy non-minority students is 1495.

wow, i wonder what the non legacy non minority non athlete would be...... yikes

That's basically what I meant. Non-athlete as well.

Our regional rep was wonderful. Very encouraging overall.

oh ok.... that makes me feel better..................................................NOT!
(BORAT reference)

ya, my rep was great too..

I've ceased to buy "very reliable sources", because so many of them give directly contradictory information. Some of the "very reliable sources", the students who work in admissions and participate in the official online chats, have given answers that directly contradict other answers given by admissions office people in the very same chat session!

I have also read a number of things in those chats, again, by the people who actually work in admissions, that I know for a fact are absolutely untrue. For instance, one chat rep stated that the rec letter had to be written by a "core" instructor--math, science or English only. I checked that out with Saracino himself by e-mail, to clear my daughter's choice of recommendation writer, and he was totally fine with it. To me, Saracino is the ultimate "reliable source" (for those unfamiliar, he is director of admissions). In the course of doing this twice, I've checked in with him a few times by e-mail to clarify things, and clarify conflicting information within the admissions department itself and also the rumor mill of this board. In each case, the information that was put forth, by people who actually work in admissions, was not the case.

What I don't understand is what purpose there is to some of you trying to freak people out on this board, using information that is of dubious authenticity. A junior or senior working in the admissions office, even if they are working the Chat Time sessions sponsored by that office, is not a reliable source. I'm not particularly sure the regional reps are all on the same page.

Bottom line is, as much as we'd like to statistically handicap things so as to have an answer in advance of the one so many of us are waiting for, admissions is not a black and white phenomenon; it deals in all shades of grey. The ND admissions office has turned away perfect score recipients and valedictorians, and accepted non-legacy non-minority non-athletes with scores below the norm, because they are trying to make a judgement about people.

There is no test score for character, which is what ND hopes to have, most of all.

To all of you freaking out right now because we've heard for the umpteenth time about "very reliable sources" about this or that stat, remember how frequently those sources are downright wrong. If you don't believe me, look up the transcripts of a few Chat Times and you can find the abundant contradictions yourselves.

To those of you posting information about "very reliable sources", if you are not willing to be quite a bit more specific about who those "very reliable sources" are, then kindly do folks the favor of refraining from panic peddling. If you've been chatting one on one with Saracino, by all means, have at it. Otherwise, all you are doing is scaring people, which does absolutely none of them any good.

By the way, Chillin, I LOVED Borat! :)
