I'm am considering designating either University of Maryland, University of Chicago, or Washington University in Saint Louis as my first choice college. I'm pretty sure I'll get into Maryland, WashU offers the most money ($2000 a year for finalists or $2500 each year after the initial one time scholorship of that amount for winners as opposed to $750-2000 at Maryland or $1000 at Chicago), and Chicago is the one that seems hardest to get in to.

Any advice? My dad suggests Chicago since he doesn't think that the difference in money is that big but I've been wondering if colleges really care about being designated.

I don’t think Admissions offices care or notice what gets selected because they know that kids change their minds.

Since none of your colleges give much at all, why not apply to a school that gives big NMF money as a financial safety? Or is money not a concern at all for your parents?

Hi - I have a related question. D would like to change her selection from her dream school to undecided. She wants to see what happens in the next few months with admissions… Anyone know how to do that? I did not see it on the NMS web page.
Thanks!

What’s the point of changing to undecided? She can always change her choice to whatever her choice becomes later. Right now, it makes no difference what she’s chosen.

She wants to see what happens in the next few months with admissions…

Her selection of her dream school has no effect on this. When she finds out what happens with admissions, she can change her choice.

However, if one of her schools has an early deadline to be selected, she should choose that school now (not undecided).

She is figuring out if she should be changing now (for merit stuff at the two schools for which it might matter). If not, she could leave it as the dream school for the time being.

Regardless, when one does want to change it, how does one do it?

Regardless, when one does want to change it, how does one do it?

Your D needs to look at the websites of the two big merit schools to see if they have a deadline to be named. If she’s not sure of a school’s deadline, email the school’s scholarship dept and ask. (I don’t think any school demands to be named this early. Typically, schools that have a limited number of NMF scholarship have earlier deadlines.).

If your D decides to name a different school, she can go to NMCorp website, download the form and fax it in.
