question about "Direct Hits".

What is differents about Direct Hits vol.1 and vol.2 what aspect in CR does they impove?
Thanks.
Suleyman.

They improve your skills in the vocabulary section of CR. Volume 2 just adds on to Volume 1.

Sentence Completion.

But what about Passage-Based? Does it affect P.B score? What increases P.B score, besides “reading a lot”?

Direct hits will help you with vocab; ive read through them a couple of times and now i hardly miss one or two sentence completions. For passage based questions, practice makes perfect. Practice using the Collegeboard Blue Book and you will do great.

thanks. I will receive my Direct Hits on 6/8. It contains list of vocabulary or what? Can you say me what it content? list of vocabulary, passages, what?
Second question, what better D.H or BARRON’S 3500?

It teaches vocabulary in a creative manner, where it uses common pop culture and trends to teach the words. I read the books through the first time and then just read the definitions through the pages. The books say they have 200 words, but there are so many more because of the way it is set up. You’ll understand when you see them. I reccommend reading a volume a day after you finish reading through them completely once. Read only the words and definitions the times you read a volume a day. You’ll be great at sentence completions in no time! I can vouch for Direct Hits over Barron’s 3500. 3500 is just too many words to learn efficiently, although many can do it I know. It is simply more efficient to focus on Direct Hits and spend the remaining time on other prepping and more useful things.

sounds like book which contains words and vocabulary builing assigments, right?

It’s the best vocab book out there. It performs just as well as Barrons 3500, meaning they both “hit” the same number of words per test, only direct hits is 450 words while Barrons is 3500…

D.H contains practice exercieses and list of words, thats all?

List of words, some practice, and using the words in context to popular movies to help you memorize them

How much time shall I need to learn detaily both volumes?

Depends on how fast you can memorize 450 words :D

We’re all different in our abilities so I cannot estimate for you.

without context?

I’m not too sure you’ll understand all the “colorful” Pop Culture examples in Direct Hits though if you don’t have a strong holding on American Literature, Langauage and History. I would, thus, try coming up with your own sentences using the words. This should also further improve your retention.

I don’t get one thing, how can 450 words replace 3500?

^

The 400 words (I believe it’s 200 per volume?) in DH appear more often than some of the words in Barron’s 3500. It would be a better investment of your time to learn the high frequency words in DH. If you have extra time maybe you could tackle Barron’s 3500.

look, but if in exam I will see a word that isn’t in D.H list? What I got to do, in that case?

I can usually eliminate 3-4 wrong choices and guess from the remaining choices if there are any. There is no sure fire guaranteed way that you will know every single word that might pop up. Direct Hits and Rocket Review do a good job of predicting what words are * likely * to show up. Sure Barrons might better prepare you by forcing you to learn more words but do you have that much time? Learning 3500 words is not easy and the time invested might be better used elsewhere (say on passage based questions?).

my first sat exam will be in 3 months. It’s very difficult to learn words without context.
