I currently have a 3.9 GPA at a highly competive university known for grade deflation. My courses consisted of a high level philosophy (the highest available to undergrads) and english classes. I was hoping to transfer out to either NYU or Columiba as a result of financial concerns, but I was recently caught smoking pot. I now face disciplinary probation and I was wondering if this completely moots my chances of admission to either of these schools.

Write a concise and articulate explanation and you still probably have a shot. 'Course I'm no Adcom but I wouldn't think that would totally stop you from being able to transfer anywhere.

Does your school have a policy about not disclosing disciplinary action or anything?

yeah i agree w/ above posters...make sure in the essay you dont try to insinuate something like "oh, its no big deal" or "everyone does it"....maybe try and have your RA write like an extra rec or your dorm/apartment supervisor write something talking about how good you've been since the incident....worst thing you can do is try to hide it in the application....

"I now face disciplinary probation and I was wondering if this completely moots my chances of admission to either of these schools."

Are you guys serious? Pot is illegal. There is no way you can explain using an illegal substance to an adcom. Like what could you possibly say?

Its not like drinking alcohol, which the act of drinking is not illegal just the age where the law believes you are responsible and mature enough to handle alcohol is 21.

While I agree with you ixjunitxi, that pot is illegal, and that there should be no way of explaining usage of an illegal substance, I have a few friends who are living proof that the world is not always in favor of what 'should' happen. At my school, a few students were caught smoking pot, and were expelled as a result. However, a few of them had already been accepted to colleges, and not just any colleges, but ivies (all names shall remain confidential). None of their decisions were rescinded. They did not have super good grades, and they did not have the connections. I think it's too early to give up your hopes yet, chuvak89.

"However, a few of them had already been accepted to colleges, and not just any colleges, but ivies"

I think it is different when you haven't been accepted yet, as opposed to having been accepted and having your admission rescinded. If you were accepted already and then the incident happened there would be no way of the adcom to know or to probe any further. However if this occured be4 hand there are ways of them finding out be4 they admit you

I think the fact that they had already been accepted made a difference, but not a big one. I think your high school informs colleges of disciplinary actions, because their respective colleges all received detailed reports of the incident.

It's extremely hard to "explain" when your offense is a substance offense. I think it is a good idea to make it clear that you don't ABUSE substances. There's a difference between smoking to relax and chill out and smoking insane amounts to get wrecked. Although they are both illegal, I think the adcoms may be more understanding if they don't think you have a substance abuse problem.

give me a break. Although I don't use pot personally, it's stupid to try and take the moral high-ground and think that just because it is "illegal" that you will never get accepted anywhere. A LOT of students smoke pot, you seem really naive and judgmental ixj

Admit you made a mistake and write a concise explanation.

^^ please stoneimmaculate, grace us with an example off a thoughtful explanation that will sit well with adcoms . Dont worry i will try not to laugh...

There is no way you can explain such a thing....i never said you cant get into a good college after being convicted of using an illegal substance. I said "there is no way you can explain using an illegal substance to an adcom"...which there isint...if there is please advise?
