I've been taking music since freshman year. I was in a select ensemble last year, and the most select one this year. However, our old conductor left this summer, and our new one is trying to make Chorus into an academic class. I need a 3-ring binder, we're going to be learning about the history of music, music theory (which our school offers as a separate class), and we're gonna have tests and quizzes. I personally think this is ridiculous, because up until now Chorus was just a class that I could pursue one of my hobbies--singing, and got to escape the academic stress for that one period. I don't have any interest in becoming a professional musician, and will not need these skills because I'm purely singing for my own enjoyment.

I'm in 3 AP's and 1 honors course and only have one free period (which only happens every other day because of double labs), and am debating dropping out of music and taking another free to eliminate stress. However, I am concerned that this will look bad on a college application, and will show that I'm not committed, etc. Any advice??

join an outside school chorus. that way you can pursue music, and wont look bad. i dropped band after frosh year in high school because i didnt have room. instead i participated in an outside of school orchestra and continued playing. if you want to drop it i would suggest taking an academic class tho because 4 classes isnt that much and IMO will make you look like a slacker if you should be doing 6. try using that period to take something new that may seem interesting.

I'm taking 2 other classes, that are graduation requirements. Hence why I only have 1 free, and I'm taking 2 sciences next semester. I'm taking a total of 7 classes / 8 periods, while most of my friends are taking 5 classes.

How many academic [ english, math, science etc.] classes are you taking besides the AP's and Honors? If all your other classes are academic, not PE etc., then you should be fine dropping a class you no longer enjoy, unless you are planning on applying to highly competitive colleges [ Ivy, etc]. To look good to colleges, you should try to get the best grades possible in a challenging courseload.

dang the same thing is happening in my band class >< except not that extreme i guess. but still..three-ring binder, participation points in BAND?

I'm taking AP Calc, AP Physics, AP Spanish, Honors English, and Business Law this semester, in addition to gym and chorus. Next semester I'm taking Forensic Science.
