Hey all,

So I just got deferred from Michigan Engineering, which I kind of expected. My application, however, is for both performance on cello and for engineering.

My audition is January 25th, and I'm expecting to be admitted for Music (12 years playing cello, all eastern cellist, worked with Michigan Conductor at NY All-State).

My question is whether or not the Music Department has enough pull with admissions to get me into the Engineering program, or if the two are completely disconnected.

The counselor in the Music Department suggested that if I attend the school for music, I could simply just take the same classes I would as if I were in the engineering program while taking my music classes, then re-apply for engineering in my second year. Does anyone have any idea how well this works?

Any feedback is appreciated!

Your decision in the music program will have no effect on your standing with Engineering. Their decision will come completely independent of the music school’s. What you can do, however, is enroll in the college of engineering at some point during your time at UMich. I know there are some required classes you must take, such as physics 140/141, etc. and if you get a high enough GPA, you can transfer into the CoE (while still maintaining enrollment in the school of music). This is far more likely to work than expecting any sort of “pull” involving the music department that you speak of. However, don’t give up hope on an outright acceptance-- a deferral is not a “no.” :)

i agree with entenduintransit

I also agree with entenduintransit. Focus on the music application for now and focus on engineering if/when you get there. You should keep in mind that each of these programs are rigorous on their own and the dual degree will require quite an effort and most likely 5-6 years.

The counselor in music said that if I go to the school for music and don’t get in for engineering, I could essentially just take all the same classes an engineer would take and design my own schedule to fit both engineering classes and music classes. She said the only difference would be that I would not technically be in the college of engineering, but I could just reapply at some point (mid first year, end of the first year)

Let’s say I go to the school for music in my first year. If I take all the normal engineering classes while taking music classes, and then get admitted to engineering at the end of the year, could I just drop Music entirely and switch over to engineering?

I’m not planning on becoming a musician when I grow older, I want to be an engineer. Obviously though I can use the cello to help me get into a better engineering school. That being said… I’m not looking to have to spend 5 years in college and/or have a rigorous course load.

Being in the CoE at UMich, you will have a rigorous course load by default. I don’t mean to scare you, but I have some friends here who are looking to be engineers and… well… let’s just say they don’t get off North Campus much.

Anyway, yes, the way you describe it, it could work that way. A transfer into the CoE once you are already enrolled in a different school is very doable.
