Question about Duke's social scene?

Few questions about Duke's social scene:
1. Is it really fratty/full of jocks?
2. How are the SLGs? Is it difficult to join one?
3. I've heard of segregation...
4. How's Durham?
5. How are club and intramural sports?

Thanks!

I can’t answer the majority of your questions very in-depth because I am sort of a hermit. BUT I’LL TRY MY BEST. (:

There are a lot of frats, and it can get quite fratty from time to time, but people respect your decision to not want to join a frat/sorority. Many of the people are athletic and work out/job/exercise, but I don’t think there are too many people who fit the bill as a stereotypical ‘jock’.

I’ve heard that the SLGs are a lot of fun, but I’m not quite sure about how difficult it is to join one because I’ve never tried.

THERE IS NONE. period. not that I know of. Some of the coolest people I know (and others in my freshman dorm support this 100%) that are of color.

Durham is sketch. Like, don’t go around Durham without somebody else at night. We had a couple of robberies just off of East Campus last year. Apparently Tobacco Road (or whatever it’s called) are pretty cool (?), but again, haven’t been there. Usually, you don’t really go off campus though, so it doesn’t matter too much.

There are lots and lots and loooooots of clubs to join. For some of the more popular IM sports, you have to try out to join. IM teams aren’t technically allowed to do that, I think, but they do anyways.

It can be, at times. But in reality, it’s not the majority of the school.

They seem very close knit. I do not believe that they are hard to get into.

It would be a lie to say there wasn’t at least a little self-segregation.

It has nice restaurants, that’s about it. Kinda unsafe.

Very fun. I’m president of one of the club sports (don’t want to which one, or you’ll know who I am  ), and you should definitely join.

What’s an SLG?

Selected Living Group - Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors. See info. on Housing page

Would you call your country a ****?

there definitely is a bit. like, you can be friends with whomever you want, but you’ll see lots of international students hanging out in groups, lots of kids from the same background tend to form circles. it’s not surprising, since people tend to want to hang out with people they can relate to, and it’s certainly not detrimental (at least, during my 4 yrs at duke, i never had any issues) to life in general - everyone’s super friendly and race is a nonissue when making friends, but you do tend to see self-segregation.

um. no. of course you don’t go walking around by yourself at night, but i wish i’d known freshman year what i learned senior year when i had job interviews in durham and no car, forcing me to take the durham bus system. i also went to professors’ houses, and i realized that durham can be sketch if you’re stupid about it and go wandering around alone, but if you’re good about it and are a friendly person, people will be super nice to you. i never had any issues, and my friends and i certainly walked around after dark. just be careful, and don’t let the “durham is sketch” sentence control how you view the city.
