Question about early action and scolarships.

Hey guys. I'm going to apply to Fordham this coming school year. I really need any kind of aid I can get. I got the National Hispanic Recognition Program Scolarship for my PSAT score. According to [url=<a href="http://www.fordham.edu/tuition__financial_a/undergraduate_studen/types_of_financial_a/traditional_rose_hil_2158.asp%5Dthis%5B/url">http://www.fordham.edu/tuition__financial_a/undergraduate_studen/types_of_financial_a/traditional_rose_hil_2158.asp]this[/url</a>], I could get a full ride to Fordham.

I want to know if applying EA would increase my chances of getting this scolarship/other forms of aid. I think my GPA/Rank/SAT is good enough to get in as of now, but I was planning on working extra hard first semester on senior year for a better rank. However, if I want to get the scolarship, should I apply EA?

In case you want to know, my GPA is 3.77 UW with loads of APs/Honors. Rank: 45/625, SAT: 2030 (will retake in October).

Thanks.

I think you should ask an admissions counselor this question bc things may have changed over the years but I don’t think that there is any advantage in securing scholarship/grant $ by applying EA over RD. In fact, I have heard of some EA FA packages actually increasing after RD packages went out so it would seem that initial EA awards may be preliminary anyway and finalized together with the RD pool.

That said, if Fordham is high on your list and you can put together a competitive application by the November deadline, why wouldn’t you apply EA? You’ll get your decision before Christmas but you will have to wait until early February for the FA package assuming you file FAFSA/CSS promptly. RD packages won’t go out until end of March at the earliest.

Good luck! :)

And even if you apply and get in EA, there is no reason you can’t send in updated information if you have a great first semester to help you to get a larger scholarship. Good luck to you.

@happy1: Really? How does one do that? I just want to make sure I get in and stuff. I’m in their range for everything and my October SAT should be better. And then there’s the whole URM thing. I think I’ll do it.

You should apply ED. They sometimes bump scholarship money as time goes on. I went from a 20k scholarship to a full tuition scholarship. I got my first FA offer when I go in in December and then my second in the spring. I think you will get a dean’s scholarship (10-22k) at the very least.

You should check with either Fordham Admissions or your HS guidance counselor since I am no expert. but I know people who applied EA/ED to colleges and later sent updated SATs/grades and/awards to try to improve their chance for admittance and/or scholarships. I believe that colleges often get updated information about students so they should have a system in place to process it.

All right. I’ll ask. Thanks!
