question about Ec's not related to majors

Ec's not related to majors

Parents, I have a question.

If someone loves an EC, for example volunteering at a hospital, so much but will not be shooting for the medical field, is it still Ok? Or an astonishing artist shooting for the business field?

thank you.

(PS i also posted this under college selection, i think, but got 1 reply.. so i'm posting it under Parents Forum.. parents have the most complete and best replies!!)

Of course it is OK. Lots of people have diverse interests. Someone working or studying in a technical field may need a creative EC like theater to provide balance in their lives.

Of course it's still OK! My son's primary EC was not related to his intended college major, but it was important to him, and he participated for five years and took a real leadership role. THAT was what was important to colleges, that the activity was meaningful to him and that he worked to make it a success.

He also had some other ECs that were more related to his intended major, but his primary one was not. He was accepted at 7 of the 8 top colleges he applied to, and is now attending MIT.

you may find more in common w/ your loved EC and your choice of major than you first thought.... and if you can develop it into a cogent essay, all the better! but no, i do not think these things must match!
and remember, different schools are looking for different things!

No, they needn't match--my dd will be heading to the Naval Academy after years of having her own flock of wool sheep and running a business connected with 4-H.

thank you for all your replies!
Yes, in the future, I would like to be a businessman but i have a strong penchant volunteering in the hospital; it just feels so warm and kind to be helping others! I don't go there for a "3 hrs / week" (average community service among my friends in the same hospital) volunteering, but I volunteer close to 15 hrs a week, since I started (not long time ago.) Now that, I think distinguishes from showing to dedication. i really love going and that's why, although i have a laundry list of schoolwork, i forget about everything everytime i go. I just love volunteering there. I know this activity is about the "usual and boring ones." but i still do lots of volunteering hours.. i may not have many activities in my list, but for each of them, i do it with all my heart and dedication: cooking, volunteering @ hospital, and tutoring spanish.

BTW, how does 15hrs of hosppital volunteering look in a college app? is it pretty common?

mootmom - do you mind asking you, what did your son's passionate EC?
