Question about ECs

Next year, I'm going to be a junior. I plan on applying to the top business schools, but I need help deciding whether I should join FBLA next year.

Since FBLA is business-orientated, and the team from my school was able to reach Nationals this year, do you think I should join next year? Its a relatively low-key club so I haven't really heard about it until recently (school has around 3500 kids), but I'm not sure how colleges will view this.

Will joining FBLA in my junior year be frowned upon?
Will FBLA be seen as stereotypical?

The other choice is for me to focus on my existing ECs (I know the argument about quality over quantity), but I'm not sure whether I should pass up this opportunity. I hope some of the smart people on these forums can help me out, and thanks a lot in advance!

My advice would be to do what you like to do and not worry about what you think colleges will make of it. So if you want to join the FBLA, whatever that is, do so.

I was thinking about that, but I could join many clubs that I like.

Believe me, I'm not doing this solely for college, I just want some advice about the college aspect of it. Thanks for replying, dchow08.

I don't think any EC's will be "frowned upon" per se. Colleges obviously don't want to see kids loading up on EC's senior year or something like that -- they want to see a demonstrated interested in each and every one. That said, if you feel like you can join FBLA and also remain dedicated to your other EC's, I say go for it.

Join if you want to join. Don't join activities just because you think the admissions counselors will want to see them. If you want to get some business experience before heading to college, FBLA could be great. But if you are more interested in joining pottery club next year, do that. They just want to see your passion. You will have plenty of time to get experience in college. High school is also a time for exploration, not just preparation.

FBLA could definitely give you valuable business experience that will be useful when you start b-school/later on. I say go for it. :D
