Next fall I will be applying to transfer to Arizona State (safety), Penn, Columbia, and Jonh Hopkins, for business. I wanted to know what is considered an "EC". I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Political Science Club, Guitar Club, Full-Time job, etc... Nothing crazy whatsoever. However, I was curious as to if I could list some independent research I've done over the past 6 months as an EC. Does it matter that it's not related to my major? (research is in regard's to asperger's, which my younger brother has)

Basically it’s anything you do outside of school with a significant value to it. Colleges want to see you have interest and passion for ECs rather than just being in 20 clubs, and volunteering X amount of hours at X amount of places. Instead, you should focus on clubs that are related to your field and volunteer for a cause you truly care about. However, there’s nothing wrong with being in a club that is not related to your major, because you wanted to explore and see how it was. As in your case I’m positive your research would not hurt you in anyway because it is your brother, and therefore it has a significant impact which you care for.

It does not matter at all the the research does not relate to your major. If anything, it makes you a more well rounded candidate; definitely list it as an EC!

include it
