Hey, as a senior applying to colleges next term, I was wondering if I would break any restrictions if I decide to apply ED to either Cornell OR Columbia and then EA to Georgetown, Rice (Interim), and UChicago. Thanks.

You shouldn’t have a problem as long as you only apply to one ED. EA are not binding, they are just like regular decision but earlier. However, if you get accepted to your ED, then you have to withdraw all your other applications and/or reject all your other acceptances.

From the Georgetown Web site:

U. of Chicago, however, does not restrict its Early Action applicants from applying elsewhere … whether via Early Action or Early Decision.

From the Rice Web site:

Rice eliminated their “Interim” application option last year. So unless they decided this was a mistake and reinstate it (not likely, IM0), you cannot apply early to Rice without being willing to make a binding commitment, if admitted.

So you could apply Early Decision to Rice, Columbia, OR Cornell (just one) and EA to Chicago at the same time. You cannot also apply EA to Georgetown. Alternatively, you could apply EA to both Georgetown and Chicago but not ED to the colleges you’ve named.

One of the many things I hate about this process is the need to comb through Web sites to find all the “rules,” which vary from college to college. I’ve confused myself already, and I’m the one giving the advice here.

Wow, thanks a lot.
