question about ED

applying a school's ED , since financial need applying scholarship also, but the result is be accepted but no scholarship .Do not know how to do?not enough money can not apply ED?

The Common Application ED agreement allows students to be released from the ED agreement if the financial aid is not sufficient for them to attend. You can certainly apply ED even if you need aid, but there are reasons why it is often not a good idea. For one thing, even if a school meets your financial need, it could be with a mountain of loans. To which school are your considering an ED application? That can make a big difference.

On the other hand, if you apply RD you will have the opportunity to compare offers from different schools.

^ I agree; I think ED should be used only at the one dream school above all others, where the only question about the FA package is “Can I afford it?”

thanks for replying and it is very useful for us.
D will apply this fall for 2011 admission.know aout hilllsdale?

I don’t know much about it. There is a forum for Hillsdale College here on CC. On the left side of the screen, select “Colleges” and go to those listed under “H”. You could ask questions there from people who will have experience with it.

It’s an oddity as far as colleges go. They don’t accept any federal aid a student might be eligible for because they don’t want the government to make requirements of them… like collecting demographic information about the make-up of the student body. Although they are proud of their early history as an anti-slavery institution, I can’t find a single photo of a non-white student on the website. There might be some, I just didn’t see them.

But, these are just things that would cause me to ask some questions… I’m not saying I have the answers because I know very little about the school. It seems to have a libertarian bent, for sure… they mention free markets and such in their mission statement.

Anyway, if you don’t know a LOT about this college and feel like it is clearly your daughter’s #1 choice, I wouldn’t apply ED. As far as the financial aid goes, though, on their website they do have a “financial aid estimator” that you might want to use. Put your financial info into it and see what kind of offer you’d be likely to get from them. That would be extremely valuable information before an ED application!

Found one! It’s on the very last page.

Anyway, I live fairly close to Hillsdale. Please, please, please learn about the school before your D decides to apply there. I just have simply not heard very good things about them. Calvin and Cornerstone are seen around here much better alternatives. It is just something worth looking into.

Best of luck for whatever fits her best!
