question about EE 42 and EE 100

I want to take CS Major in the future, Can I take EE 100 instead of EE 42? Since EE 42 is the required course on the website, but actually EE 100 and EE 42 are the same course

That should be fine. Worst case scenario is that you’ll have to petition for it, but I bet you’ll get it approved.

EE42 is the lecture component, EE43 is the optional lab component. Combine the two and that is called EE100. It doesn’t make much sense to take EE100 instead of EE42 when CS majors can take the EE43.

If you really want to take a class where there are EE students, take EE40 instead since it is a required course for them.

If you look in the Fall 2011 schedule, EE 42 has the same lecture time and room as EE 100, and EE 43 has the same lab times and rooms as EE 100. But grading obviously differs, since EE 42/43 would have two separate grades instead of one grade for the combination, and EE 43 is offered only P/NP. Here is a course home page for a previous semester – see the grading policy at the bottom: http://rfic.eecs.berkeley.edu/ee42/

It does seem odd that the supposedly “lesser” version of the course for non-majors is listed as an upper division course (EE 100), while the version of the course for majors is listed as a lower division course (EE 40).
