Question about emphasis on PC

I did a little reading on this forum, and I saw a couple people mention that Brown likes PC alot? (political correctness) That kinda seems to go against the liberal-ness Brown is associated with o.O So what’s the actual stance? (hopefully this isn’t true haha) Is it the whole university that takes that stance? Does the admissions officers take that stance? Cause I have a personal statement that is uh…anti political statement basically…and I reallllly liked it lol. So basically…I’m trying to see if I should write another one.

Was your statement anti-political, as in, "all politics sucks, why bother?" or just not PC (could be offensive to some, or against some particular political movement or group, etc)?

when i tell you the central argument...you're probably gonna say no way right away, and that's what i'm afraid of. so i've tried to structure my essay as uncontroversial as possible...

basically: racial equality through the telling of racial jokes. pc=bad because it ostracizes groups and labels them as different. world would be better if we could take the racial jokes as just that, jokes. so we would laugh at our differences rather than acting on them.

sometimes ad coms can really help you out. say you are un-pc and the college is really pc (which brown is, i mean you cant ever tell a race joke outside a group of friends, and they might shun the joke) then by rejecting you, they help you maintain who you really are. dont go change for a college. show the real you, thats what gets you in. plus, i think thats a stupid topic.

I don't think they mind kids being a little un-pc, but I have to agree with crumflake that your topic is pretty bad period.

That topic kind of has an implicit point (whether true or not) which is: "I can afford to laugh about these things". Probably not a good reflection on your character.

A lot of kids here will get their panties all bunched up at the sound of anything even remotely un-PC. I think that's true at a lot of colleges, though.

Basically, if you can't handle a little racial joke, you suck.

im sure "you suck" is a bashing agianst those that perform that action. amor, i suggest you stop being so close minded with you very un-pc comments.

yea, like i said, my topic comes off probably as wth?! when you hear just the topic. i'd hope that after reading the whole thing, it wouldnt come off like that...but since they have to read it so fast, your reaction to the topic probably isn't so far off from what they might feel.

so ok, thanks for the advise guys.

although this is a brown thread...we're on the topic of pc...so just a quick question, is johns hopkins strict on pc as well?

Or you could learn that things can be funny even if they aren't 100% unbiased, prude. You're probably one of the morons who protested Columbus Day.

Yeah, nice conclusion! I was saying that you suck.

Are you one of those rich white kids who claims to hate all racism yet has never had contact with a real black person?

I think it has a high down side risk and no upside.

What if the adcom misinterprets and thinks that you are a racist?

beprepn

amor, are you one of those jackasses who talks before (s)he thinks?

im not rich, nor am i even white. look at my name, gee...i wonder what rice could mean. if you are so quick to jump to conclusions, you should be quick to conclude that im asian.

and i do in fact protest columbus day cause the myth of columbus is a lie.

this thread should be closed btw, i got the help i was looking for.

(I think amor was talking to crumflake)

Awkward...

Woah guys. Could we please refrain from using words like "jackass" and "moron" ...? We're all smart. That's why go to / are applying to Brown.

Also, the fact that this thread got nasty so fast does demonstrate that you've picked a risky topic for your essay. Colleges in general are under fire right now for not being inclusive enough of minorities, so they're pretty self-conscious about it, especially in the admissions process. I don't know if your essay sounds racist (it probably doesn't), but an admissions officer might not want to take the risk when there are dozens of equally qualified applicants.

Yea, thanks for the advise ILoveBrown, I wrote a new essay anyways...but now I'm having doubts about Brown lol...

Are there forum admins? Cause this thread's done so it can be closed.
