Does anybody know if, when you apply to Notre Dame as a high school senior, you have to apply directly to the College of Engineering to do engineering at ND as an undergrad, or if you can still do engineering after the first year of studies?

You apply to Notre Dame, and you are automatically put into FYS if accepted. You tell your advisor what you're interested in, and they'll make sure they start you on the right track, but you don't decide until the end of your freshman year. You are guaranteed to enter the school you want to at that time.

For future reference, questions like these have been asked and answered dozens of times. Take the ten seconds to do a search next time.

Yes, you can search--the School of Engineering website has a wealth of info as well. If you are remotely interested in eng, according to our Junior eng student, you will start out taking the Intro to Eng class, fall semester of your freshman year. You will know if you want to continue in eng based on your taking this class as many people switch by semester's end. It is much easier to switch out of engineering than to transfer into eng after your freshman year, which is why your advisor will place you in the intro class. You are still under the First Year of Studies umbrella which allows for this type of transfer. Hope that helps!

Yes, thank you!
