I want to major in material sciences at umd, for the engineering lep it says calculus II is a requirement to be taken freshman year. At school i have taken honors calculus, and as I am entering my senior year I am taking statistics. the math class i am scheduled to take is supposedly a joke math class (my friend who was in it, asked me what the formula for area of a triangle is ....). The thing is im pretty much out of options. Since i took honors calc last year, i can either go to statistics (scheduled), AP Stat (i hear thats very hard), and AP Calc AB. Im already taking three other AP's so im not sure if i want to add another one. I'm worried that if i make it into the engineering program, calculus II will just blow me away? Any thoughts?

You could take the exams in college or get 4/5 in ap calculus BC to pass this requirement.
Otherwise you have to take it. The honors calculus in your high school schedule won’t make you skip it!

thats not what i was saying, im saying since i only took honors calculus, will calculus II be too hard for me, any ways to better prepare for it?

You first have to take a math placement exam so they can determine if you what math class you should take. If you do well you will have the option to take MATH140 Calculus I. I took AP cal in HS and got a 5 so I tested out of MATH140 Calculus I and i am enrolled in MATH141 Calculus II. If I had wanted I could have repeated Math 140.

I think you are wrong when you say you have to take MATH141 Calculus II as a Freshman. I know of engineering majors that are taking MATH140 Calculus I as freshman.

MATH141 Calculus II is a very hard class…even with my AP score I am worried about it

it says the calc II is a requirement, but im not really sure if it’s required to be taken freshman year since it is worded kinda funny, can anyone confirm if calc II must be taken freshman year in the enigineering lep?

If you can not handle AP Stats, you are not going to be able to handle the engineering department at MD.

You can take calculas I fall semester and calculas II spring semester. I don’t understand the problem.

You do not have to take calculus II in your freshman year, but you must pass it with a C or better by the time you earn 45 credits at MD (not including AP credits.) So for most students, this means you will have to complete calculus II by the end of your 3rd semester on campus. You cannot jump right into calculus II though without passing the AP Calc AB exam.

If you already took honors calc, I would recommend taking AP calc AB this year since you are already familiar with it. That will let you jump right into calc II at Maryland. I would even recommend taking AP calc AB if it meant dropping another one of your APs, because it will let you get into the engineering classes just a little bit faster. Calc will be infinitely more useful to you in engineering than stat. Also, unless your school has a very tough teacher, AP stat is usually seen as one of the easier AP exams.

If you’re set on going to MD, take a look at the chart of AP credits and make sure you can get credit for everything you’re taking:
