Question about essay

The essay questions say to "tell us about an event or experience that helped you define one of your values or changed how you approach the world."

Is that just way of saying "write what you want, as long as it's about something important to you"-- a free essay like Yale's or Harvard's? If I wrote an essay that's related to how I approach the world but doesn't center on one specific event, is this okay?

I would be more cautious and really try to follow their essay prompt by talking about an event or experience, since that’s what they specifically ask. If you’re planning on writing an essay about how you approach the world, it shouldn’t be too difficult to tie in an experience that you’ve had, since you most likely developed your approach to the world through your experiences.
