It's kinda too late to do anything about this, but what happens if my common app essay is really long (like 1600 words long LOL, I don't know what I was thinking)...?

Will it really hurt my chances of getting into Yale (or any other school as a matter of fact)?

Yale has a disclaimer on their FAQ page. It reads:
“We ask that you respect the word limit we suggest. Will we read the words beyond 500? Yes. But if your essay is much longer than 500 words, understand that you will not help yourself by seeming to have ignored our request.”

I guess it depends on whether your essay is really “as long as it needs to be” rather than stuff to bore them. But I can’t imagine what would require so many words…

I went over the limit, myself. Main essay was 681 while the supplement was around 490.

the thing is i thought that was only for the Yale specific essay on the supplemental. The 1 essay that is for all colleges, it didn’t say anything about…

I feel like killing myself idk wat i did that for

kapenak: Please try not to beat yourself up over something you can’t correct now. While it’s advisable not to exceed the suggested word limit by more than 10% or so, every year on CC students report acceptances to highly selective schools with 1000 word+ essays.

No, you were correct. There is no word limit for the common app essay.
Most people do not have a CA essay under 500 words. 1600 is a little long and maybe a little risky, but it isn’t a death sentence.
If you’d like anecdotal evidence, someone from my school had a 2000-word common app essay. He was accepted early to Cornell.
