Question about establishing Texas residency

Hello,

I am currently a junior from Indiana and pursuing dental school.

I am strongly considering moving to Texas for dental school. I not only want to do this for the lower tuition but also because when I graduate I plan to live and practice in Texas.

Now I am curious if my plan will work. I have looked at the guidelines but am still unsure.

Based on info found here: https://www.tmdsas.com/dental/Residency.html

1.) I will move to Texas in July 2015.
2.) I will finish my degree in one year at UNT Dallas.
3.) I will buy either a house OR a cheap piece of land (will the land suffice? I do not want to buy a house in Dallas if I will get into dental school in Houston or San Antonio. Would be a hassle selling it.
4.) I will apply to dental school the following July. So I will be in Texas/ have owned a house for 12 months, have my texas ID, car registered in TX, etc
5.) My fiance will also be working in Texas full time the entire time.

From what I understand this should work.

Any advice or insight?

based on what you plan to do, you should qualify for in-state tuition. this might be helpful: http://www.thecb.state.tx.us/reports/pdf/0183.pdf

it’d be very smart to establish residency because there’s a law that actually only allows state funded medical/dental schools to admit 10% of OOS applicants… so I’d definitely recommend it. good luck!

My daughter was an out of state freshmen FALL 2013. She got a TX driver’s license and voter’s registration first day in TX. She rented an apartment, got Electric in her name, found a part time job where she worked about 24 hours a week. In July of 2014 she submitted a letter from employer stating hire date and hours, attached a copy of her first and last electric bill, TX driver’s license, and rental contract. She was classified as in-state within a week of paperwork submission. Hope this information was helpful.
