Question about examples to use in essays.

Is it okay to use examples from television shows (like the characters, plot happenings)? (for example, Heroes, Lost, etc)
The only thing that bothers me is because the television shows are more, should i say, unrealistic (in the case of the examples i mentioned above)... would that be a problem and weaken my argument? or would using them be just as appropriate as examples from literature/history?

thanks in advance!

anyone care to bother? :(

it might not be as reliable as historical/literary examples because the reader might not be familiar with it. however, people make up personal experiences all the time for the essay, so I would say if you provide enough detail, it should not be a problem

In the section “The Essay” of the blue book (btw I’m referring to the new edition), there’s an essay using only 2 examples, one from the TV show Friends and one from The Catcher in the Rye. It received a score of 5.

Personally, I would use a TV show example (as long as it supported my thesis of course) without a second thought.

Use whatever examples are relevant to the topic, and if a TV show makes sense, use it! Just like with every other example, you need to assume the reader knows nothing about the show and provide enough information so that your point is clear. Good luck!
