Question about Exeter

Hi. When I visited Exeter, I noticed that my tour guide and other students had this "I'm so much better than you cuz I go to Exeter" attitude. Is this true for most Exeter students? This is the thing that's steering me away from Exeter and is the reason that Exeter is almost last on my school preference list. Any help? Thanks

This is why revisits are important. See how you feel then.

Can’t answer this directly, but what I was told is that once you’re a part of that “inside circle” (i.e. a student at Exeter), acceptance by your fellow students is automatic. In other words, doesn’t matter what color you are, what nationality you are, how weird you are, or how absolutely nerdish you are - if you’re an Exeter student, your fellow students don’t question your right to be there. Again, this is what I was told by someone who should know - I haven’t experienced it directly. Current Exeter students or parents might disagree.

I don’t think that’s the attitude. I’m an alum and when my daughter and I toured we explained over an over again to the poor girl that it was a formality - she’d already been there for summer school. But the kid couldn’t get off the script. Even showing me details of a dorm after I told her I lived there.

So I began asking her questions to get her off the script and it was as if she was trying to “impress” me. Then I figured it out, a lot of those kids may appear confident, but Exeter is a tough existence and you’re constantly trying to “prove” yourself.

So don’t take it as an aside. There are “stiff kids” and “fun, go with the flow” kids. You’ll find that anywhere.

I agree about revisits. You’ll get a fuller sense of if Exeter is for you or not.

I’d say that’s fairly accurate. My son would probably say that you always have to explain yourself, rather than prove yourself. You can’t really open your mouth without having to justify your response, tell why.

As for what dodgersmom said, the only kids who probably question why someone was admitted or if they are “good enough” to be there are probably the kids themselves (about themselves).

Thanks for the replies. If there are any current Exeter students, any response would be nice. :)

That’s strange, I didn’t get that sort of vibe at all…Exeter seemed very down to earth to me.

I think those kids exist at every boarding school. :(

Normally I’d agree with you, intrisically. However, this was the general feeling I got and my sister said the same thing when she visited two years ago.

What did you observe specifically to give you that feeling?
